The origins of this small, round, medallion sized cheese, which is a member of the Cabécou family, probably go back to the time of the Arab invasions in the South of France. Locally Cabécou means little goat and this particular cheese gets it’s name from the spectacular cliff-side village on the Lot river. The goats roam on an open, chalk plateau that is rich in aromatic plants producing milk with immense character. The cheese itself is supremely velvety and melts in the mouth with a rich, full taste. Perfect as an appetiser served with a light, fragrant, dry white wine. Catch this when in season from late Spring through to early Autumn.

Aquitaine The region of Aquitaine was once a large province, encompassing much of south west France. It is now much smaller and borders the Loire valley in the north, the Auvergne and Languedoc in the east. Substantial numbers of farmers produce goat’s cheese throughout the region, but most of this production is consumed locally, being bought at nearby markets or served at restaurants where the farmer is often personally known to the chef.
