Morgon Vieilles Vignes, Domaine de la Chaponne 2003 Morgon Vieilles Vignes, Domaine de la Chaponne 2003

Morgon is one of the most sturdy of the Beaujolais Crus, yet has a very accessible and intense bouquet and fruity palate. The initial impact is one of cherry or Kirsch, and in the mouth the bubble-gum taste effected by the Carbonic Maceration technique used in Beaujolais is much less obvious allowing the varietal characteristic of the Gamay grape to show. This Morgon may be aged for up to 5 years.

Domaine de la Chaponne
Laurent Guillet has 11 hectares under vine in the Côte de Py and Grand Cras with an average of 50 years. As a consequence yields are very low and flavours more intense – so intense in fact that Andrew Jefford wrote that ’the cherry aromas are so irresistible that it would be hard to sleep under the same roof as an unopened bottle.’ Laurent is recognised in Morgon as a fine winemaker. He uses concrete vats but has experimented with some barrel aged wine too.
