Condrieu Coteau de Chéry, Domaine Niero Pinchon 2001

From Viognier grapes, from vines grown on slopes of granite and schist soils with an age of up to 60 years, this is a very deep and serious wine. The aromatic, apricot quality of the grape stands out, but this has more depth and weight than many in its class. Spicy hints work well but the overriding feature is one of length and an exquisite finish. If you have not tried a Condrieu before, you should. –you won’t regret or forget it!

Domaine Niero Pinchon
Robert Niero inherited this estate from his late father-in-law, Jean Pinchon in the 1980s and went from a suit-wearing banker to a hands-on vigneron with great success. He has gradually added small parcels of vineyards to increase his holdings to 3 hectares in the Condrieu appellation. The precipitous slopes of granite and schist harbour cocinellles (ladybirds) as Robert does not believe in insecticides. He vinifies the grapes from different slopes separately and the styles reflect this difference. The Coteau de Chéry is wine made from old vines and fermented and matured in young oak barrels.
